Understanding Prepositions and Conjunctions With Tutoring Help

When we look at a sentence, most of us don't immediately start pulling it apart and identifying the parts of speech. For the most part, we are able to notice when something in that sentence just doesn´t sound right. Each part of speech allows us to properly structure a sentence and be able to identify the role of each word in the sentence. Nouns, verbs, and adjectives are usually easier to master than less obvious parts of speech, such as prepositions and conjunctions. That is why today at The Tutoring Center in Friendswood,  we want to briefly discuss prepositions and conjunctions.

Prepositions

  • The relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in a sentence is shown by using prepositions.
  • Prepositions usually show direction, location, time, etc.
  • The preposition is usually always before the noun or pronoun.
  • Examples: to, at, on, of, from, between, with, etc.
Sentence Examples
  1. I am going to the library.
  2. He sat on the couch.
  3. The movie starts at two o´clock.

Conjunctions

  • To connect words, clauses, or phrases we use conjunctions.
  • Examples: or, and, but, so, unless, either, because, etc.
Sentence Examples
  1. I like dogs, but I am allergic to them.
  2. He is handsome and smart.
  3. Do you want a hotdog or a hamburger?
  4. I was tired, so I went to bed early.
